One way congregations can de-center whiteness and decolonize is to use video to bring a wide variety of voices and experiences into our sanctuaries and meetings.
Below, you’ll find a list of TikTok creators. This is not an exhaustive list, but it’s a good example of what’s available on TikTok. The first examples are a bit longer than is typical (most TikTok videos are under 3 minutes). While you’re watching these videos, if you like them, look at the video description for hashtags, and put those same hashtags in the search bar to find more videos like theirs!
The PDF includes links to sample videos. If you open the links on a computer, you do NOT need to download TikTok. The videos may default to no sound when viewed on a computer--move your cursor over the video and click on the speaker icon at the bottom of the video to turn on sound.
You can also go to tiktok.com and use the search bar to search for topics like “Navajo culture,” then click the “video” tab to see top videos on that topic. Using the search feature WILL prompt you to create an account. Feel free to share these with others! You can find my own content at https://www.tiktok.com/@disorganized.religion.
At the very least, these videos may give folks an idea of the kind of content available on platforms like TikTok.
